We live in a word where normal is not enough, we always are looking for the extra-ordinary. This thirst to want more and experience something better than the best has always moved scientists in the areas of technology to achieve the inevitable. One of those achievements would be experiencing real live experiences through virtual reality. The craze on viewing things in virtual reality has reached a peak where the New York Times has decided to release NYT VR.

The launch of the VR is in association with Google, where more than a million Google Cardboard viewers will be provided with a subscription to their copy of the NYT in November. To top it off the Times Insider subscribers and a selection of Times digital subscribers will be provided with a promo code that allows them to access Google Cardboard viewer which can be viewed on the smartphone.

The debut of the virtual reality film called ‘The Displaced’ by NYT was one that took many of its viewers by storm. The movie revolves around three extraordinary children uprooted by war, all through the lens of virtual reality. As of date there exists more than 30 million children around the globe who have lost their homes by war and oppression as much as once faced in World War II. This film sheds light on the present lives of three children from South Sudan, eastern Ukraine and Syria.

The opinions of the viewer’s clearly explain what virtual reality in today’s world really means in terms of quality viewing experience. Dean Baquet, executive editor, The New York Times said, “Our readers look to The Times for innovative and powerful storytelling and this is The Times at its best. Our Magazine team has created the first critical, serious piece of journalism using virtual reality, to shed light on one of the direst humanitarian crises of our lifetime.” The editor in chief of the New York Times Magazine added “The power of VR is that it gives the viewer a unique sense of empathic connection to people and events. In the context of international reporting and conflict reporting, where our readers rely on us to bring them news and stories from remote and inaccessible places, this has huge potential. Through this immersive video experience, we can put our readers at the center of the most important story of our time.”
